HISTORY

Sonobudoyo first was a foundation that is engaged in the culture of Java, Madura, Bali and Lombok. The Foundation was established in Surakarta in 1919 was named the Java Institut. In the 1924 decision of the Java Instituut Congress would establish a museum in Yogyakarta. In 1929 the collection of cultural data from Java, Madura, Bali and Lombok. Establishment of Museum Planning Committee was formed in 1931 by members include: Ir.Th. Karsten P.H.W. Sitsen, Koeperberg.

Using the former museum building land “Shouten” land gift from the Sultan VIII and marked with sengkalan candrasengkala “Blind ngrasa estining lata” Java ie 1865 or 1934 AD. While the inauguration done by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana VIII on Wednesday 9 January 1866. During the Japanese occupation Sonobudoyo managed by Regent Paniradyapati Wiyata Praja (Social Office part of teaching). GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sonobudoyo museum was opened in 1935 and is devoted to the study and appreciation of Javanese culture. The building itself reflects traditional Javanese architecture. As you enter the museum, in the front pavilion you will see two gamelan (traditional musical instruments) sets, one carved comes from the Cirebon palace, and another from the Yogyakarta Palace.

Among the permanent collection of the museum is an impressive collection of ancient bronze bells, also from, Java, Sunda, Bali and Madura as well as an exquisitely carved teak partition from Jepara, on the north coast of Java The museum also has an extensive library with ancient books about Javanese Culture.

SHADOW PUPPET SHOW

Inside Sonobudoyo museum  also held shadow puppet show. The event is held daily, except on national holidays.
