Sewu Temple (Candi Sewu): A Group Of Thousand Temples

Sewu Temple is the second largest Buddhist temple complex after Borobudur Temple. HISTORY

Sewu temple is the second largest Buddhist temple complex after the Borobudur Temple, built around the VIII century. Based on the inscription dates 714 or 792 CE found in Sewu temple complex in 1960, mentioned that there was a sacred building called Manjusrigra. Manjusriga means the house of Manjusri1, the original name of Sewu Temple.

Manjusri is a Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhist teaching symbolizing the “Gentle Glory” . However, based on an inscription dating from 792 CE  and the Kelurak inscription dated 782 CE (found near Lumbung Temple, a few hundred meters from Sewu Temple), it can be estimated that this temple was established at the end of the reign of Rakai Panangkaran, a great king of The ancient Mataram kingdom that ruled in 746-784 CE.

SEWU TEMPLE DESCRIPTION

The temple is located in Bugisan Village, Prambanan Sub-district, Klaten, Central Java Province with 17 Km distance from Yogyakarta City, its location is still one complex with Prambanan temple, it is the biggest Buddhist temple site after Borobudur temple in Magelang predates the nearby Prambanan Shivaist temple by over 70 years, and predates Borobudur for about 37 years.

The name of the temple itself does not mean Sewu temple has a thousand temple buildings ( Sewu in javanesse language is thousand ), the temple only has building of 257. With 1 main temple 8 temples and the rest as a perwara temple with various statues and reliefs that you can find in it.

After visiting the prambanan temple you can visit this temple to see the magnificence of the Sewu temple. This temple describes how harmonious relationship hindhu and budha at that time, which can be seen building of buddha temple and hindhu temple in one complex of prambanan temple.
