Sam Poo Kong Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in Semarang, first built in 17th century  by the Chinese Muslim explorer Cheng Ho, also known as ( Sanbao ). It is now shared by Indonesian’s multiple religious denominations, including Muslim, Buddhist and ethnicities such as Chinese and Javanese.

HIATORY

The Cheng Ho temple or better known as Sam Poo Kong was first built in the 17th century or more precisely in 1724 by Admiral Cheng Ho of Ming dynasty. Then the Chinese etnic that staying in Semarang rebuilt this Temple in the sense of being a form of tribute to Admiral Cheng Ho who was regarded as their ancestor.

SAM POO KONG DESCRIPTION

History of Sam Poo Kong Temple establishment is actually quite controversial, because Cheng Ho was an admiral of Ming Dynasty who was a muslim, even in some historical versions, the Ming Dynasty was known the largest Islamic Dynasty in China at that time called Yunan. Another vertion mention Cheng ho wasn’t a muslim. History also mentions that Admiral Cheng Ho was a great explorer, who had sailed across many oceans. Including Java, or better known as Java Dwipa (Java Island), Cheng Ho had conducted two expeditions with the aim of bilateral, cultural, and economic relations with the Javanese kings.

Beside being a place of worship, the Sam Poo Kong Temple also as tourism place. Strong red architecture of the building as a symbol of luck, that give an interesting point to many visitors. Sam Poo Kong is the title given by Semarang chinese  to Admiral Cheng Ho for his services. Besides Sam Poo Kong, some of the titles that given to Cheng Ho  such as: Sam Poo Thai Jin (Admiral), Sam Poo Thai Kang (Emperor), and Sam Poo Thai Rin (Leader).

In certain time, Kong Hu Chu followers also hold annual ceremonies to commemorate Cheng Ho’s arrival in Semarang, namely Lak Gwe Jhi Koo between June to August. They also held a ceremony on Friday Kliwon and Tuesday Kliwon in honor of Shipwright, Wan Cing Hong.

The Sam Poo Kong Temple has several places and relics that are considered sacred, even has power, partly used for worship and others only for collections. The place used for worship is “God of Earth” place which has some such names; Hok Tek Chen Sing, Boo Tek Cheng Seng and Ta Pei Kong. And there is also Shipwright tomb, “Wang Cing Hong”.

Sam Poo Kong’s Holy Cave used by Cheng Ho to rest and praying. The boat cooker’s tomb, “Kyai and Nyai Tumpeng”. So it appears in Javanese tradition with the term Tumpengan or ritual using tumpeng rice. In addition, there is Arwah “Hoo Ping” ( the house ), this place is used to send “Holo” to spirits by using paper cars, paper boards, money paper aim as gifts for the spirits by burning them. Then there’s “Kyai Anchor” (Legacy from Cheng Ho’s ship) and the statue of “Kong Hu Chu” who believes as a philosopher.
