Ratu Boko Temple/Palace is glorious building that was constructed during the reign of Rakai Panangkaran of Sailendra dynasty. This temple offers a great phanoramic and golden sunset that allows you to see Yogyakarta city and Prambanan temple with Merapi Mountain as the background.

HISTORY:

THE CONTRUCTION OF RATU BOKO TEMPLE

There is an ancient inscription brangka (abhayagiriwihara ) in 792. On this inscription mention about tejahpurnapane panamkarana or better known Rakai panangkaran, the ancient king from mataram kingdom lived in 746 – 784 AD. In the inscription mentioned that he had ordered the construction of abhayagiriwihara interpreted as a peaceful monastery on a hill as we know now named Ratu Boko.

Beside abhayagiriwihara inscription found on Ratu Boko Temple, there are several other inscriptions that mention the abhayagiriwihara building. As mentioned on Kalasan inscription 779 AD, inscription mantyasih in 907, and inscription vanua tengah III in 908 and one more abhayagiriwihara inscription written by letter of panagari. It is a hallmark of Buddhist inscriptions.

Furthermore, after the end of the panangkaran power, the next ruler is rakai walaing pu kombayoni who came to rule in 898 until 908 AD. During the reign of rakai walaing pu kombayoni this palace changed the name into walang palace and also changed the function became a bastion of defense during the war, and equipped with a pile of boulders like a fort.

DISCOVERY OF RATU BOKO TEMPLE

Kraton Ratu Boko was first discovered by Dutch archaeologist, HJ De Graaf in the 17th century. In 1790 Van Boeckholtz rediscovered the ruins of the ancient buildings. His discovery was publicized, and attract the attention of scientists such as Makenzie, Junghun, and Brumun who recorded the site in 1814. In the early of 20th century, Ratu Boko was re-examined by FDK Bosch. The results of his research were wrote in the a book titled Keraton Van Ratoe Boko.

RATU BOKO TEMPLE DESCRIPTION

Ratu Boko Temple (Javanese language: Candhi Ratu Baka) is an archaeological site that located approximately 3 km south of the Prambanan Temple, 18 km east of Yogyakarta City. The temple is standing on a hill at an altitude of ± 195.97 meters above sea level. The total area of the complex is 25 Hectares. This site displays the attributes as a place of residence or as a palace, and used by people in the 8th century during the reign of Dynasty Sailendra (Rakai Panangkaran).

Ratu Boko Temple has two elements of religion such as Hinduism and Buddhism. The element of Hinduism is seen in the presence of yoni, ganesha,durga and siwa statues, as well as silver plates marked mantea of Hinduism. While the element of Buddha is seen in the buddha statue, the ruins of stupas and stupika.

Now the government incorporates the Ratu Boko Temple Site complex into a special authority, together with Borobudur and Prambanan Temples into one management, the site is already included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. As a consequence, Ratu Boko Site is rearranged to be a place for education and cultural activities.
