HISTORY

An expert named De Casparis supports the idea that Plaosan Temple built during the Rakai Pikatan period of Hindu Mataram kingdom, which was at the beginning of the 9th century AD. De Casparis’s opinion is based on the inscription of Cri Kahulunan (842 AD) which states that Plaosan Lor Built by Queen Sri Kahulunan with the support of her husband. De Casparis argued further that, Sri Kahulunan is a Pramodyawardani title, the daughter of King Samaratungga from Shailendra dynasty. The princess, a buddhist then married Rakai Pikatan from Sanjaya dynasty, who was hindu.

ROMANTIC STORY

The Most Romantic Temple Story. Long before William Shakespeare created the romantic story of Romeo and Juliet – Hamlet, long before the romantic titanic story. Rakai Pikatan had offered proof of true love that didn’t distinguish religion, nation, and culture. Differences of religion and ideology can not separate them, but instead support each other and strengthen one another. Their love is reflected in the architecture of Plaosan temple.

plaosan temple

The beginning of the construction of the temple was originated from the love story between Rakai pikatan and Pramudya wardani which was not supported by each family because of the difference of principle, culture and religion. Then they built the plaosan temple which became a symbol of the immortality of their love that we now know as a combination of hindu and budha.
