Kotagede: Royal Graveyard And Silver Handicraft

Kotagede royal Graveyard holds important graves that trace connections of Mataram with earlier kingdoms, geneaology of the rulers and their progenitors. It is guarded and maintained by cara taker who are employed by the two palaces of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Javanese dress is required to enter the cemetery and can be hired at the registration post. STORY

In the 8th century, Mataram (now called Jogja / Yogyakarta) was the center of the Hindu Mataram Kingdom which controls the entire Java Island. The kingdom had tremendous prosperity and great civilization that was capable built ancient temples with majestic architecture, such as Prambanan Temple and Borobudur. But in the 10th century, somehow the kingdom moved central government to East Java. The people leaved Mataram and sooner this region returns to a dense forest.

Six centuries later Java Island was under the rule of the Pajang Sultanate based in Central Java. Sultan Hadiwijaya, who ruled at that time awarded a large Alas Mentaok ( Alas = forest ) to Ki Gede Pemanahan for his success in conquering the enemy kingdom. Ki Gede Pemanahan and his family and his followers moved to Alas Mentaok, a forest that was formerly the former of Hindu Mataram Kingdom.

The small village established by Ki Gede Pemanahan in the forest began to prosper. After Ki Gede Pemanahan died, he was succeeded by his son with title senopati Ingalaga. Under the leadership of the wise King, the village grew into a growing and prosperous city, called Kotagede (big cities). The Senopati then built a inner fortress (cepuri) which surrounds the palace and outer fort (baluwarti) that surround the city area of about 200 ha. The outer side of the fort is also equipped with a wide defensive trench like a river.

Subsequently under Panembahan Senopati’s leadership, the mataram kingdom expand his power area to Pati, Madiun, Kediri and Pasuruan. Almost all Java Land became the dominant territory except Batavia and Banten. This Islamic Mataram kingdom reached its peak during the reign of the third king, Sultan Agung, who was the grandson of Panembahan Senopati. Sultan Agung in his reign in 1613 moved the royal center to the region of Pleret Bantul, Karasura then ended in Surakarta until now.

Kotagede is one of the ancient city or the old capital city in DI Province. Yogyakarta is still alive and growing, both in terms of people’s lives and their spaces. Kotagede as a central city of government leaves archaeological heritage such as the palace, castle, perimeter, jeg, cepuri, mosque, tomb, and ancient settlements. These components form and reflect the social, economic, and cultural conditions of its support community.

When standing as the capital of Mataram, Kotagede was still a region of Pajang kingdom. Through a long process with various agitation, Mataram became a kingdom which replacing the domination of Pajang kingdom. In its development, the capital of Mataram was evacuated from Kotagede to Kerta, Plerét, then moved again to Kartasura, and eventually settled in Surakarta. However, unlike Kerta and Pleret, Kotagede still left more significant archaeological legacy. In addition, it still exists as the old city that survived its dynamics to date.

SILVER CITY

Around the 16th century many Dutch people ordered silver household appliances, so many silver craftsmen sprawled in the kotagede. In the 70s -80s era, kotagede experienced a success periode as a silver industrial center, the tool was very dominating the demand of foreign tourists. You can tour the silver handicrafts because there are many stores and galeries that you can see. This silver handicraft is very diverse, from the ring, the bracelet, to the statue.

The corshede silver craft is a heritage of hereditary culture, formerly a handicraft not only silver, but also gold and copper. But time by time, silver is the most enjoyed handicraft. Besides being able to interact directly with craftsmen, you can also learn to make silver handicraft.

The Royal Graveyard holds important graves that trace connections of Mataram with earlier kingdoms, and the placement of the graves within the covered area of the graveyard can be considered as a physical representation of ‘silsilah’ or geneaology of the rulers and their progenitors. It is guarded and maintained by Juru Kunci who are employed by the two palaces of Yogyakarta and Surakarta.
