Imogiri Cemetery: Royal King’s Graveyard Complex

Imogiri Cemetery isn’t just a historical tourist attraction but also used as a religious tourist attraction. As a cemetery of the royal descendents from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, this graveyard attract  hundred tourists on a certain day. Pilgrims that coming visitting cemetry need to step up on 410 stairs to reach the top of the hill where the tomb of the kings rested.

HISTORY

The Mataram king’s tomb or better known as Imogiri cemetery built around 1632 to 1640 and with the architect was a royal palace servant named KRT. Tjitro Koesoemo (his tomb is outside the walls of Imogiri’s Cemetery) on the orders of Sultan Agung or Adi Prabu Hanyokrokusumo, the 3rd Sultan of Mataram, descendant of Panembahan Senopati, King of Mataram 1. And 13 years later after the construction of the tomb completed, in 1645 Sultan Agung died and buried in Imogiri on the top of the hill of Pajimatan, with his wives. Until now the tombs are preserved and often visited by the people of Jogja and the tourists from various regions.

IMOGIRI CEMETERY DESCRIPTION

Imogiri graveyard complex located in the village of Ginirejo, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The building is a Hindu-Javanese tomb, very unique and surrounded by walls as thick as 1.5 m and this cemetery area is considered sacred because buried here are the kings and royal families of Mataram Sultanate. After Mataram split into two parts, namely Kasunanan in Surakarta and Kasultanan in Yogyakarta, the cemetery is divided into two parts as well, east part is for Yogyakarta Sultanate and the west for Kasunanan Surakarta. The first king of Mataram was buried in Imogiri, Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo. He decided that Imogiri will become his grave someday after his death. Until now the King of Yogyakarta and Surakarta Sultanate who died buried here.

Mataram kings buried in this area include: Sultan Agung Hanyakrakusuma, Sri Ratu Batang, Amangkurat Amral, Amangkurat Mas, Paku Buwana I, Amangkurat Jawi, Paku Buwana II s / d Paku Buwana XI. While from the Sultanate of Yogyakarta, such as: Hamengku Buwana I to Hamengku Buwana IX, except HB II was buried in Kotagede palace.

If you want to reach the main area of the tomb, you need to work hard as you will  step up on 410 stairs to reach the top of the hill where the tomb of the kings rested.  In addition there is a procedure to enter the tomb, in that place almost the same as in Kotagede Palace, where every visitor is required to wear Mataram’s traditional clothes/costume.

TRADITIONAL COSTUM NEED TO WEAR

Gentlemen usually wear bebed or nyamping leaving a bare upper body, or Pranaan Yogya – the costume dress used by officials. While women will need to wear nyamping and kemben, a batik cloth wrapped in such way and that leave your shoulders bare. You also have to walk barefeet to respect the local rules and tradition. There are special schedules to visit here so that you better check before your arrival.

Imogiri Cemetery isn’t just a historical tourist attraction but also used as a religious tourist attraction. The unique fact that every year there are thousands of people from various areas fighting for the wastewater (enceh) in Sultan Agung grave inside graveyard of Imogiri. On every Tuesday night ( Kliwon ) and Friday Kliwon there is also  ritual to surround Imogiri cemetery wall 7 times, as a caring attitude. This ritual isn’t only made by Yogyakarta residents but many people come from various cities, such as Surakarta, Klaten, Magelang, Purworejo, even some from East Java.

Start From Tugu Railway Station: Firstly you can take Trans Jogja with route ( 2A ) and stop in Tungkak shelter, then please take route ( 4A ) to Giwangan Bus station, then please take a public bus to Imogiri and stop at Imogiri bus station, then please take a walk or take motorcycle ( ojek ) to the Cememtery.
