GEDONG SONGO TEMPLE STORY

Gedong songo temple is a Hindu relic from Syailendra dinasty which was built by Putera Sanjaya as an ancient Mataram King in 7th century. At gedong songo temple there are several statues of gods such as Shiva Mahaguru, Shiva Mahakala, Shiva Mahadewa, Durgamahesasuramardhani and Ganesya. Gedong songo temple was used as a place of worship for the Hindus. Inside the gedong songo temple also found Lingga and Yoni which is characteristic of hindu temple in Indonesia.

GEDONG SONGO TEMPLE DESCRIPTION

Gedong Songo means ‘nine buildings’ nine is very important number in the Hindu culture. The complex consists of a group Hindu temples on top of green, forest. The temples were built before Prambanan and Borobudur which makes them the oldest Hindu temples on Java. The temples are around the same age as the ones on the Dieng Plateau. Because the complex is located only about 40 kilometers south of Semarang it’s an easy visit from Semarang. The temples are situated on naturally formed plateaus which makes that you get to enjoy the most beautiful views of the area.

This temple has a strategic location, precisely at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level on the slopes of Mount Ungaran Semarang. You can enjoy and feel the scenery and facilities provided around gedong songo temple area. In addition natural beauty, cool air, pine forest, fog, and also you will find a hot spring which containing sulfur. Temperatures around the temple range from 19 – 270 Celsius. But actually this cold temperature makes this place more suitable as highland nature tourism, because far from the pollution, noise and free of vehicles.

THE TEMPLES POSSITION

Gedong Songo temples consist of five clusters, they are Temples I, II, III, IV and V.
Temple I, located at 1,260 meters above sea level, only has one complete temple left. Temple II is little bit far 300 meters from Temple I, just one complete temple, named Temple IIA; the other, Temple IIB, is in ruins.

Temple III, located at 1,298 meters above sea level and about 100 meters from Temple II, consists of three complete temples. Temple IV is slightly higher at 1,300 meters and 200 meters across a ravine from Temple III, consists of two sub-clusters.

Temple V is higher than temple others, located at 1,310 meters and 507 meters from Temple I, consists of two sub-clusters. The first sub-cluster holds three temples in a row, with the middle one intact, the other sub-cluster comprises three temples are still ruin.
To get to the temples visitors can do small trekking, or riding horse, both can be done while enjoying the fresh air and the extraordinary natural beauty.

MISTIC TEMPLE

Gedong Songo Temple has a very strong mystical aura. Proven by people who have seen the spirits or possessed when going for camping. In the location around the the temple there are also hill Kendalisodo and Cave where Hanoman meditated. The location of the temple in the hill also has a function as a place for worship. Because according to Hindu beliefs at that time. The mountains are considered as heaven of gods.
