Dieng Plateau temples is a group of  8th century hindu temple and estimated as the oldest Hindu temple in Java. There is no written source about the history of that building, but experts estimated that they were built as ordered by Sanjaya Dynasty. Local Javanese population named each temples according to Javanese wayang characters, mostly taken from Mahabharata epic.

DIENG PLATEAU AREA

Dieng plateau actually a very active volcanic plains, and can be regarded as a giant volcano. Some people call this place “Dieng Plateu”. People also mention Mount Dieng. Dieng is located around Wonosobo and Banjarnegara regencies and betwen two big mountains such as Sindoro and Sumbing Mountains.

Dieng Plateau lies at an altitude about 2,000 meters above sea level extending north-south direction around 1900 m with a width 800 m. As an active volcanic mountain, this plateau also has some very active craters that are scattered in some places with considerable distance. Becouse of the dieng’s possition is high enough, so that makes the temperature in that area is very cold for Indonesian. During the day, the temperature range of 15 ° -20 ° Celsius, and 10 ° Celsius at night. While in certain months the temperature can reach 0 ° Celsius.

THE TEMPLE COMPLEX AREA

Dieng Plateau Temple complex are hindu temples to worship Siva built in the end of 8th century to 9th century period, and estimated as the oldest Hindu temple in Java. There is no written source about the history of Dieng Temple, but experts estimated that they were built as ordered by Sanjaya Dynasty. In Dieng Plateau area found an inscription date back 808, the oldest inscription written in old Javanese letters. All of Siva statues found on the location are now displayed in National Museum in Jakarta. The temple construction was estimated made in two stages. The first stage was from 7th century until the quarter of the 8th century for Arjuna Temple, Semar Temple, Srikandi temple and Gatutkaca Temple.  The second stage is the continuation of the first stage, until 780.

The temple was found in 1814 by a British soldier, when the temple was covered by mud. In 1956, Van Kinsbergen led the drying effort of the temple cluster. In 1864, East Indied government cleaned the site and followed with recording and documenting by Van KInsbergen.

The whole complex is 1.8 x 0.8  km square. The complex devided into three clusters and one single independent temple. The three clusters are Arjuna Complex,,gatutkaca Complex, Dwarawati Complex and Bima Temple.

ARJUNA TEMPLE COMPLEX

Candi Arjuna

Arjuna temple which is one of the main temples. This temple is a cube with a base area of about 4 square meters. The body of the temple stands on a 1 meter high frame. The arjuna temple is located at the southernmost end with an entrance that has a staircase facing west. At the top of the door is decorated by Kalamakara sculpture. Based on reliefs and sculptures, Experts say, Arjuna Temple along with Sembrada Temple and Puntadewa Temple was built to worship the god Shiva.

Candi Srikandi

Just next to Arjuna Temple to the north there is Srikandi Temple. This cube-shaped temple stands on a 50cm high frame. The original form of the temple’s roof is not seen anymore because it has been destroyed. Srikandi Temple was built to worship the three main gods of Hindus (Trimurti), namely Lord Vishnu, Brahma, and Shiva. For that reason, in the walls of Srikandi temple there are sculptures with reliefs of Trimurti, the relief of Lord Vishnu on the north wall, the relief of Brahma in the south, and the relief of Lord Shiva in the east.

Candi Sembrada

The next temple in the row of Arjuna Temple Complex is Sembrada Temple. This temple was also built for the worship of Lord Shiva. The body of this temple is square-shaped that stands on the batur as high as 50 cm. At a glance this temple looks terraced because the top or roof of the temple that the shape and size is almost the same as the body.

Candi Puntadewa

Puntadewa temple is a temple located at the northern end of the Arjuna Temple Complex. As one of the main temples, the size of this temple is the smallest. Although the size is not too large, but the building is quite high because it stands on a 2.5 meter high batur. There is only a narrow empty space in this temple. Just like Arjuna Temple and Sembrada Temple, the temple building is made to worship Lord Shiva who is the supreme deity in the Mahabharata.

Candi Semar

Semar Temple is perwara temple or auxiliary temple in the Arjuna temple complex. Semar Temple in the form of longitude this is the smallest temple in the temple Arjuna temple complex. This temple acts as a temple means, the temple is used to place for prying together before entering the main temple. The location of this temple is not a row with the other four temples. Its location in the west or its position is directly facing to Arjuna Temple. The inside of Semar Temple is just an empty hut with small windows. The body of the temple stands on a plain without decoration as high as 50 cm. The original shape of the roof section of Semar Temple is unknown because it was destroyed.

GATOTKACA TEMPLE COMPLEX

Candi Gatotkaca

Gatotkaca Temple is a temple in Gatotkaca Temple Complex which was first restored. Among the six temples within the Gatotkaca Temple Complex, this temple is the most intact and sturdy stand. Gatotkaca Temple building at a glance like a storied building because the shape and size of the top or roof is made almost the same as the shape and size of the temple body. Gatotkaca temple is square with a size that is not too big, 4.5 x 4.5 square meters. On the other side of the wall there is a niche decorated kalamakara. The roof top has been destroyed so that no longer visible form of the original.

Candi Setyaki

Setyaki temple is a temple included in the restored of Gatotkaca Temple Complex. Although some parts of this temple has been replaced with new building materials, but this temple is still worth the history. Actually, the reconstruction of Setyaki Temple is not yet complete. There is still part of the temple that has not been completely closed, like the top that is not roofed.

KOMPLEX CANDI DWARAWATI

Candi Dwarawati

Dwarawati temple is a unique temple in the Dieng plateau temple complex because of its hidden location. This temple is located in the middle of the settlement and surrounded by agricultural land of Dieng Kulon Village. This is the only temple whose name is not taken from the names of the puppet characters in the Mahabharata. The name Dwarawati is derived from the name of the capital of Dwarata Kingdom in India. The temple building is similar to Hindu temple building in India. Dwarawati temple is very interesting to visit because the area surrounded by residential area decorated with farmland potatoes. The landscape is interesting to document.

KOMPLEX CANDI BIMA

Candi Bima

Bima temple  mentioned as the largest temple among the temple collection in the Dieng Plateau area. Located in the southernmost complex of Dieng’s temple complex, this temple is secluded on a hill. Administratively. Bima Temple entered in Dieng Kulon Village, Batur District, Banjarnegara District, Central Java. The location is close to Sikidang Crater, just next to the entrance of the crater area. In addition to Sikidang Crater, Bima Temple is also close to Telaga Warna and Dieng Plateau Theater.
