cetho temple

Cheto Temple is the last hidu temple built at the same time with the Sukuh temple around the 15th century at the end of the heyday of the Hindu Majapahit Empire.  Cetho temple has similarity with Balinese architecture that we can see today becouse basically they have historical connection.

CETHO TEMPLE DESCRIPTION

Ceto temple is a hindu religious temple, administratively located in Dusun Ceto, Gumeng Village, Jenawi District, Karanganyar Regency on the slope of Mount Lawu at an altitude of 1496 m above sea level. Based on the research of scientists and archaeologists, Cetho Temple is estimated built at the end of Majapahit era (15th century AD) or in 1451-1470 when King Brawijaya V ruled in Majapahit. This temple built for ritual of reinforcement because at that time the Majapahit kingdom were many riots and problems.

Cetho Temple complex was first discovered by Van der Vlis in 1842. Furthermore, the historic building received much attention from archaeologists such as W.F. Sutterheim, K.C. Crucq, N.j. Chrome, A.J. Bernet Kempers, and Riboet Darmosoetopo. In 1928 the Antiquities Department conducted research through excavation to search for more complete reconstruction materials and the subsequent restoration was done by Humardani a personal assistant of President Soeharto in 1970.

But the restoration proved to be extremely controversial and reaping a lot of criticism from historians and archaeologists of the time. This occurs because the process of restoration and rebuilding of the temple site was done without going through the process of assessment and in-depth research. So what happens is the temple restored and rebuilt without regard to the original structure.

This makes Cetho temple Karanganyar architecture we see today cannot be accounted for conformance shape with the actual structure of the temple. So now we actually cannot know with certainty whether the form of the temple is now the same as the original form of the temple or not. Several new buildings were made at the time of the restoration is the front gate, the hermitage in the form of wooden buildings, phallus, at the height berunden cube, and some sculptures like the statue of Brawijaya V, Sabdapalon sculpture, and sculpture Nayagenggong.

THE PANORAMA AROUND

In the temple area tourists can see clearly in various directions. To the north there are views of Karanganyar and Solo City with the background of Mount Merbabu and Merapi and, furthermore, the peak of Mount Sumbing. To the west and east visible green hills stretching, while to the south there is Mount Lawu.
